12723 Hyderabad Deccan Nampally - New Delhi Andhra Pradesh Express comes to a grinding halt for a scheduled stop at Ramagundam. AP Express is renowned for its well maintained coaches and aggressive runs. This is my first video of the SCR king and I hope to bring you more videos of AP in the future.
The Andhra Pradesh Express or AP Express is a Superfast South Central Railway train which connects the Andhra Pradesh state capital Hyderabad and India's capital city New Delhi. It operates daily, taking around 27 hours to cover the distance while passing through the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana.
Indian Railways has numbered 12723 for the Hyderabad - New Delhi run, and 12724 for the New Delhi - Hyderabad run. The train service was first started by Madhu Dandavate in 1976.
Initially during 1978, the Andhra Pradesh Express covered the distance in just under 23 hours. Since then the running time of the train has increased. When this train was introduced many of the sections of the route were single-line, almost 300 km out of a total of 1670 km. The signalling in 1978 was semaphore based.
When the service introduced, the 14-coach train was pulled by a 2600 HP ALCO derived diesel locomotive - a WDM2 using the Indian Railways' nomenclature. In 1981 the capacity was increased to 21 coaches pulled by 2 ALCO (WDM2) derived locomotives with a combined 5200 HP. This double-headed power pulled the train up and down the hilly sections (with 1:63 gradient) between Itarsi and Nagpur Junction for a distance of 300 km. The train originally had a fully equipped pantry car.
Currently, the Andhra Pradesh Express operates with 24 coaches (including 7 air conditioned coaches) and is pulled by Electric locomotive WAP-7 throughout the double line electrified section with modern concrete sleepers. The signalling is electronic and the drivers use radios to maintain communication with controllers, but the running time continues to increase.
As at 26 April 2010, the train was pulled by a WAP-7 from the Lallaguda Electric Loco Shed throughout the journey. The other trains going through the Northern Plains have been allocated WAP-5 and WAP-7 locomotives as they traverse through less hilly regions.
From its commissioning in 1978 until the early 1990s there were just five stops in the Andhra Pradesh Express service - Jhansi, Bhopal, Nagpur, Balharshah and Kazipet.
Since then several intermediate stops have been added leading to the present run time of around 27 hours.
